Christie Signs Landmark Anti-Bullying Law

Senator Diane Allen (R- Burlington/Camden), co-prime sponsor of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (S-2392), praised Governor Chris Christie for signing the bill into law morning.  The Senator called the Governor’s approval “a courageous action that will protect New Jersey’s most vulnerable schoolchildren.”

“While learning to deal with hurt feelings and unkind treatment are part of growing up, there are certain children who are victims of constant, vicious threats and intimidation,” said Senator Allen.  “Not only does bullying jeopardize the victims’ physical and emotional well-being, it impedes their ability to learn.  I commend Governor Christie for signing this legislation into law.”

Senator Allen has been a longtime advocate for legislation that addresses bullying in schools, introducing the first anti-bullying bill in state history. That legislation was signed into law in 2002.

“We have witnessed too many instances where aggressive or intimidating actions directed at a child have tragic consequences,” said Allen.  “The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act will ensure that teachers and administrators are properly trained to intervene in these incidents, and are required to act when bullying is witnessed or reported.  Parents will be empowered with information on their school district’s effectiveness in combating bullying and a direct line of communication with school officials if their child is affected.  While we cannot change human nature, we can change how government and school officials respond to unacceptable behavior.  That is exactly what this law does.”
