Sestack Gains On Specter

From Alex Rose in the [Delaware County, PA.] Daily Times.
An online straw poll put together by a progressive political action committee showed overwhelmingly that those participating in the poll would like U.S. Rep. Joseph Sestak, D-7, of Edgmont, to run against newly minted Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter in next year’s primary election.
More than 7,500 people took part in the Progressive Change Campaign Committee poll, which was sponsored by left-leaning organizations like the Pennsylvania Progressive, Keystone Progress, Democracy for America, and others.

According to final results tallied Monday, 86 percent nationally and 85 percent in Pennsylvania said they would like to draft Sestak to run against Specter in 2010.
The poll’s legacy is an ActBlue Web site designed to garner donations for a Sestak run. As of Monday evening, that site had generated $445 toward the cause from 17 donors. Should Sestak decide to run, said PCCC co-founder Adam Green, that money would be donated to his war chest, which already tops $3 million.
If Sestak doesn’t run, Green said the money would be funneled into ActBlue, an online fund-raising endeavor for Democratic candidates and causes.

While Sestak told Green in a message Monday he was honored so many had taken part in the poll, the sophomore representative has still not announced a 2010 Senate run.
Sestak has been critical of Specter’s motives for switching parties, saying he isn’t sure the elder statesman — who spent 29 years in the Senate as a Republican — is now really a Democrat.
Specter, who never fully toed any party line, cited as his main motivation for the switch a markedly changed Republican Party following last year’s presidential election.
