Leno: It's Not My Looks

From Flash News:
Funnyman Jay Leno knows that audiences don’t want to look at him, they want to laugh at him.
Leno’s last appearance on The Tonight Show is May 29, and over the past 17 years on the show he’s learned that without jokes, he’s nothing.

He attributes the success of his late night gig to well- written monologues and “fast and furious jokes,” since people don’t tune in to see his face.

He laughs, “I’ve never assumed people want to look at me. So my job is to make people laugh.”

His mother always advised him to work extra hard in showbiz to counter his average appearance, and Leno has perfected a formula to get the biggest yucks out of everyone.

He says the key to making fun of people is “sizing up the situation.”

For instance, “if you see a fat guy, make fun of his tie,” if a corporate executive comes in the room, “nail him,” and if a working-class janitor walks in, “build him up.”
